A leap of faith I am mastering is getting into a strange man’s car. I thought that the dudes who rolled around in the big old yank tanks were so cool that they always had lots of friends. However, ALL cars in Cuba are potential taxis (illegally but very widespread), and these cars have more seating space than newer ones. So when you want to go somewhere, unless you want to pay in CUC and almost certainly have a wee fight about the cost and possibly get ripped off with the change (you ALWAYS have to check the change, or as another student commented: “Cubans aren’t very good at math”) [...]
Three Minutes to Find a Soul Mate: A Tale of Speed Dating in Seoul
EXPAT LIFE, Korean Life 28 comments!By Star Spangled Soju

The dating scene amongst foreigners in Seoul, if we’re honest with ourselves, is lackluster at best. Everyone has the same job, goes to the same places and nearly everyone has come to this country for one of three reasons: job’s easy, money’s alright or there’s nothing for them back home. There’s also the added fact that as foreigners our stay here is temporary, making it difficult for many to pursue the possibility of a relationship while here. [...]

The Beatles’ Taxman
“Huh? Um .?.?. Okay.” This was my initial reaction when I finished reading the article “Taxes on expats to increase this year” (Feb. 20) in the JoongAng Ilbo.
I mean, there isn’t much an expat can do in response to this “news” unless it is to pack up and hit the road.
And then I thought, how much of the tax code do I actually comprehend? Did I even get the exemption that allows 30 percent of one’s income to be exempted from taxation? I have no idea.

People work and walk and sing and drink, but underneath it all, like any good city, is another face. People on street corners staring into what you are meant to perceive as nothingness; the telephone box users are not making calls,[...]

Quite quickly upon arriving in Korea the average foreigner is exposed to a great number of unique cultural pastimes — among the most indulgent of which is the “jimjilbang”. From reading tourist materials and speaking with a local Korean friend, the foreigner can quickly elucidate a mental image of one such place — [...]

Hola mio amigas
160km an hour. I kid you not. This was how my summer trip began. At the airport bus stop, as is often the case as my stop is the last one before they hit the expressway, a cabbie rolls up and offers to take you out for not much more than the bus. As is also often the case, I’m running slightly behind schedule. What does a girl say? Of course! The guy was beeping his horn at buses, and overtook 3 cars on the edge of the road! I was too scared to remember the Korean word for scared and too petrified to interrupt his [...]
