The Pvt. Andre Fisher Case: Inconsistencies and Misinformation

In the initial police report of the 19 November 2010, it is stated that the taxi and driver were found “parked on side streets” by police patrolling the area. The two police officers proceeded to ask the driver what had happened. The three men then searched the area together “the subjects were found” and “the police… ran after Fisher for about 5 meters and apprehended.”

Based on the aforementioned document included in the same file entitled “Examination Evidence List 13-1 Execution of the CCTV CD Evidence Investigation,” the taxi was parked at 682-19 Hannam-Dong when the crime occurred, with the crime being recorded on the council camera overhead. The same document also states that at “02:24:51, the aforementioned person hurries out of the taxi, and simultaneously, another person gets out of the taxi through the back right door and both run towards the alley behind the taxi.”

The driver states in his witness deposition that he gave chase shortly after the crime occurred, but not “simultaneously” and that he (the taxi driver) “ran after… and recognized the clothes’ of the attacker.”

Korean World Cup Fever (or is that nationlism?)

devsIn case you’ve been hiding in a cave for the last eight years, in 2002 Korea and Japan co-hosted the World Cup. Such a decision was surprising—no nation had co-hosted before—but what was more surprising was the performance of the national team. They powered through the groups, the knockouts and the quarter finals before losing to Germany in the semis. Now, some cynical people think that FIFA were lenient on the Taeguk Warriors because they were a host country. However, I’m a more optimistic person—I truly believe it was a combination of leniency and dumb luck that pushed the Korea national team through to the semis.

Whatever it may be, during that surrealistic run in 2002 the country was abuzz with nationalist, flag-waving fanaticism, the likes of which one almost certainly could not see in any other country in the world—aside from North Korea (though this was not a staged event for the agitprop machine)—where even procreation skyrocketed like a mini baby boom.

Gwangju? Because Not All Roads Lead to Seoul

I’m going to level with you from the outset: twelve months ago, I’d never even heard of Gwangju. My geographical knowledge of the Korean peninsula was sketchy at best and I was as guilty as every other naval-gazing Westerner in assuming South Korea began and ended in Seoul. So I’ll forgive those of you who have yet to be awakened to the undoubted charms of this parochial southern city. A year down the line, my eyes are open.

This is an international edition of Big News! But of course, where would we start but right here before wandering the globe for a roundup of recent events. So, in following up on 3WM’s theme about room salon culture…
Seoul, South Korea. Last week the Justice Ministry announced that foreigners who had obtained residency status by marriage will no longer be allowed to work in ‘night-time entertainment venues’, such as massage parlors, hostess bars, noraebang, or any other places that “disturb the social order and ‘good’ social conduct”.

Greetings, fellow seekers of truth, beauty and public trash receptacles. It’s time again for the news. As we all know, last month’s tragic sinking of the Cheonan which claimed 46 lives has shocked the nation. I have nothing to report on this — partly because everybody has already formed an opinion, partly because only the people who were there know what actually happened, and they’re not talking,
